Deftones to perform in Utah on Wednesday

Unfortunately, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is still trapped in a bed, paralyzed from a 2008 car accident.

Filling in indefinitely is Sergio Vega, who in a Tribune interview said it was an "honor" to play in Cheng’s place in a band that he has admired ever since a 1997 tour when his former band Quicksand opened for the California-based electric rock band.

With the band’s album "Eros" still shelved because it was the last album Cheng played on, the band’s last album "Diamond Eyes" and forthcoming album "Koi No Yokan" have both seen Cheng’s involvement, and "Diamond Eyes" was the Grammy-winning band’s finest hour, showing a diversity and thoughtfulness that most "metal" bands never achieve.

As for the band’s head-scratching album title, Cheng said it was borrowed from the title of an unfinished song from friends in the band Dillinger Escape Plan; it is Japanese, Cheng said, for a phrase that closely mirrors the idea of "Love at first sight."

Scars on Broadway open.
