Jerry Joseph & The Jackmormons perform tonight (Thursday) in Salt Lake City.

It has been 17 years since former Salt Lake resident Jerry Joseph first performed at Burts Tiki Lounge, and Joseph and his Jackmormons are back at one of Salt Lake City's signature bars. In fact, rootsy rocker Joseph is also celebrating 17 years playing with the Jackmormons. In a phone interview, he was asked if there was comfort in playing together for nearly two decades. Nope. "There's a level of vindictive bitterness," he said, half-joking. "We're always at each other's throats. But that's what makes us a good band." Because of the name of the band, Joseph is asked around the world about Mormons, even though he's not one. On a recent tour of southeast Asia, he said, "I've had people come see me because they wanted to see a Mormon." With a Mormon now the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Joseph said interest in Mormons is skyrocketing, to the band's benefit. The band was dubbed the Jackmormons, Joseph said, "because 17 or 18 years ago I knew Mitt Romney would get the GOP nomination, and then we would be in the sweet spot."
