Here are shows from Friday through Tuesday. I know Tuesday isn't a weekend by any means, but I;ll be in the Windy City from Friday until Wednesday.
Chris Cagle
Spotlight show • Country singer Chris Cagle will headline the 14th annual Pony Express Days closing concert and fireworks, with local favorite Charley Jenkins opening. Cagle signed to Virgin Records Nashville in 2000 and made his debut on the Billboard country chart with "My Love Goes On and On," the first single from his debut album, "Play It Loud." The album also yielded hits "Laredo" and "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out." Cagle has in part taken a break from country for something that is more important to him. "I take more pride in being a father than in everything else," he said in a Tribune interview. When he does write songs, he has a simple credo. "I write a song to change the way your heart feels in 3 1/2 minutes," Cagle said. "If you have a [political] message, put it on a billboard." But, again, he takes solace in his home and family. "Everything else besides my family is craziness."

Greg Laswell
Spotlight show • The husband of popular singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson likes girls. So much so that on his last album. "Landmine," he enlisted some of his favorite female singers to back his folk-infused pop songs, including Sara Bareilles and his wife. Part of the inspiration, Laswell said in a Tribune interview, comes from listening to a hip-hip mixtape his friend gave him about a year ago. "It was listening to a lot of things I didn’t normally listen to," Laswell said. What he found engaging were the dynamics of songs such as Eminem’s "Love the Way You Lie," where the rapper would handle the verses and Rihanna would sing the hooks. As he jogged when listening to the mixtape, he realized he wanted to "make something different." Another new strategy for Laswell is realizing that he was writing when happy — as he is, since marrying Michaelson. Before, he could only write songs when he was sad, he said. One last tidbit of trivia: Laswell knew well one of my best friends from high school, Shaun McClellan, when both attended Point Loma Nazarene University. Small world. Elizabeth Ziman from Elizabeth and the Catapults opens.

Leland Sundries
Spotlight show • As a high-level publicist in New York City, Nick Loss-Eaton worked with artists including Bruce Springtseen, Son Volt, Ry Cooder, Tom Morello, Todd Snider and the late Levon Helm — "all inspirations of mine," Loss-Eaton said in a Tribune interview. But as his indie-folk project Leland Sundries began attracting more and more attention, he left his job to follow his bliss. "It was a pretty hard decision," he said. "It was a decision about following my heart." With a group of guys in Brooklyn who are coalescing as the newest incarnation of the band, Loss-Eaton will be performing for the first time in Utah with only one guitarist backing him. But whatever the lineup, his music revives the spirit of the band’s name, taken from a trip to the South when he met the olds bluesman Eddie Cusic — who taught Little Milton — in Leland, Miss. When traveling throughout Memphis, he noticed the word "Sundries" on a number of signs — something you don’t often see as a Yankee. It seems fitting that his first instrument was a harmonica, inspired by Bob Dylan — another hero whose time in the South influenced him for the rest of his life.
