Notes from the evening in the press room:
Adele: "Very proud of myself" … "it's been really, really peaceful [since having the vocal cord surgery]" … "I stuck to all the rules they gave me" … "I'm so mouthy, but it was hard to be silent" … "I think he'll be very happy for me" [in regards to the lost love that inspired the album].
Bon Iver: "This is the biggest night in music, but a very small Staples Center" [in regards to all of the unnamed great acts he mentioned in his acceptance speech that never will be on the Grammys]. "The songs came from an unconscious place" … [First cassette he ever bought was Primus' "Fizzle Fry," and first CD was Nirvana's "Nevermind." His favorite moment of the night was seeing Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys perform a tribute to Etta James.]
[Al Jardine of The Beach Boys said the band's forthcoming album will rival "Pet Sounds"]
Bonnie Raitt: "We're all in shock"[about Whitney Houston's death]
Ryan Tedder, who produced some of Adele's record, including "Rumor Has it": "None of this was supposed to be on the radio." [Since then, he has canceled some writing/producing sessions with unnamed pop stars to work with artists who aren't conventionally on the radio.] "It just happened."
