Kathy Stephenson
Kathy Stephenson has been the food writer at The Tribune since 2000. A Utah native, Stephenson's first job was picking zucchini on her grandparent's Kaysville farm. Every Christmas, Stephenson's neighbors and colleagues look forward to getting a plate of her baklava. Last year, she gave away nearly 300 pieces.

Salt Lake celebrates with Cheesecake

The new Cheesecake Factory at City Creek Center, which opened today, served more than 600 pieces of cheesecake by 3 p.m., according to a mall spokesperson.

The restaurant, located in the southeast corner of the mall, had more than 100 people in line at 11:30 a.m. and has been at capacity since opening.

Other interesting first day facts:

The Michael Kors store sold 100 purses by 3 p.m.
bebe and 77kids by American Eagle stores hit sales goal for the day within one hour of opening.
