Five Wives is Utah's newest spirit

A new vodka, with a name that pokes fun at Utah’s polygamous past, is now on the shelves at select Utah liquor stores.

Five Wives Vodka, created by Ogden’s Own Distillery, recently released 60 cases of its new 80-proof spirit. The state has given it a limited release, placing it in only a few test stores. None of the Salt Lake City outlets carry it.

Five Wives is distilled from a 50/50 blend of wheat and corn, said owner Tim Smith. It is filtered multiple times through active carbon and then combined with spring water from Ogden Canyon before bottling. A 750 ml bottle cost $19.99.

Smith said he focused on Ogden’s “dark history” when it came to naming the new vodka. He said one of the first pioneer wagon trains that came through Utah spent time in Ogden. The caravan included 66 men and five women.

This is the second spirit that Ogden’s Own Distillery has released. The company launched three years ago with Underground Herbal Spirit, a liqueur flavored with 33 herbs spices and natural flavors.

For those who want to sample the new spirit with food, MacCool’s restaurant, 2510 Washington Blvd., Ogden, is holding a Five Wives Vodka dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Food is $29; wine and spirit pairings are an additional $15. Call 801-675-5920 to make a reservation.
