So it looks like the guy who helped rebuild the team and just brought in a new striker is going to stick around awhile himself.
General manager Garth Lagerwey has agreed to a new five-year contract that will keep him on the job with RSL through the 2014 season, team officials said today, just hours before meeting the Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field. Not a bad reward for a guy who not only helped assemble the team that won the MLS Cup last season, but also plans to marry at the end of this season and move into a new home in Salt Lake City soon.
"I wake up every morning feeling lucky that I work for RSL," he said.
The first year of Lagerwey's new deal takes the place of his contract for this season — he had been working on renewable one-year deals — effectively making it a four-year extension. And speaking to him this afternoon was the first time I'd heard him use the word "dynasty" in reference to RSL, when he thanked majority owner Dave Checketts and other team officials for "the opportunity to build a dynasty here at Real Salt Lake."
Judging by the trophy sitting inside Rio Tinto Stadium and RSL's place near the top of the Major League Soccer standings, it's probably fair to say he has a shot at accomplishing that goal.
