Utah coach Kyle Whittingham wasn't thrilled with Tuesday's practice, the first day of live work for the Utes. Whittingham said the team lost its composure too much and the tempo wasn't where he wanted it to be. "Sometimes when you get into live work you press too much," he said. "We have to settle down, work on techniques and keep the focus." Running backs James Poole and Karl Williams were both solid with the 6-foot, 243-pound Williams in particular showing some effort as he wiped out several would-be defenders. Poole is proving to be a solid receiver, an element crucial for the backs this year. "We are throwing to the backs more this spring than ever," Whittingham said.Sophomore defender Jason Whittingham is undergoing shoulder surgery Wednesday and will miss the rest of spring practice...The Utes practice Thursday from 3-5 p.m. - Lya Wodraska
