With the state tournament starting, and signing day for him still nine months away, Brekkott Chapman still doesn't have to confront or think seriously about, or commit to a college just yet.

Still, everyone wants to know. And The Tribune caught up with the 6-foot-8 Roy High star junior forward, who had 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots on Tuesday in a win over Springville.

Here are a few of the cliffnotes with Chapman, who is being recruited by most of the western United States right now.

* Conference play is important, and Chapman likes the Pac-12 for the star power and the overall competition. Of course, this could really excite a Utah fan. Of course, in addition to an offer from the Utes, Chapman has offers from Arizona State, UCLA and Colorado.

* Gonzaga is really coming on strong. The West Coast Conference school has been recruiting the junior hard. They have a potential Final Four team this season and they have the ability to play a national kind of schedule, all of which is appealing to Chapman.

* Chapman likes all three instate schools. He told The Tribune that he's close to the coaching staffs at Utah and Utah State, and that he likes BYU and has played there a lot with the team in informal pick-up games.

* Style of play is important. He likes to run, handle the ball and play in a system that uses his strengths.

* The world should expect a commitment late in the summer, after the AAU season. Chapman will focus a lot more on his recruiting after the year is over.

"I want to improve as a player and I want to make sure that I investigate things thoroughly," Chapman said. "I have to get stronger. I have to get ready for college basketball. But I love the recruiting process. It's an honor to think that I may have the chance to go to college for free."

On Tuesday Chapman showed glimpses on why he's so highly coveted. He dominated defensively. He scored with his back to the basket. He rebounded. He handled the ball on the fastbreak and he hit a 3-pointer.

Currently he's ranked 45th nationally in the class of 2014. With a good summer, his star could continue to rise.
