Former receivers coach Gonzales could be Utah's next assistant

While Dennis Erickson might be a popular choice by fans as Utah's new assistant coach given his offensive experience, the Utes could be looking to a coach more familiar with the program. The Champaign News-Gazette is reporting Billy Gonzales is leaving Illinois for another job. Gonzales shared the offensive coordinating duties with Chris Beatty, who was let go at the end of the season when Illinois averaged just 16.7 points a game. Gonzales would be a logical candidate for Utah's offensive opening, given his ties to Utah and his knowledge of the offene. Gonzales coached Utah's receivers and served as the special teams coordinator for 2003-04 as a member of Urban Meyer's staff. Gonzales is known as a good recruiter with ties to the south, having spent two seasons as the passing game coordinator at LSU in 2010-11 and serving as the receivers coach at Florida from 2005-09. - Lya Wodraska
