Utah State could be close to filling one of its coaching vacancies.
The Herald Journal and CoachingSearch.com have reported that the Aggies will hire Tommie Robinson for the running backs coach position. Robinson, who is coming off a three-year stint in the NFL, held the same position from 1992 to 1993 and reportedly helped recruit Matt Wells to Logan for his college career.
The Herald Journal's Wade Denniston reported the hire could come as soon as tomorrow. CoachingSearch.com's Pete Roussel said Robinson may still be a target for another program.
A source told the Tribune that Robinson's name had come up in the coaching search and that a hire "could be close."
Utah State Athletics spokesman Doug Hoffman said it was unlikely any announcement would be made Monday about any football coaching staff hires.
Robinson would certainly bring experience if he were to have a second tenure at Logan. When he first came to Utah State, he was just starting out a career that would bring him to Texas Christian University, UNLV, the Dallas Cowboys, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Miami and, most recently, the Arizona Cardinals.
According to Robinson's Cardinals bio, he's worked with Emmitt Smith, Beanie Wells and Tatum Bell among other backs. Utah State has had a pretty successful run of rushers of late, including Robert Turbin, Michael Smith and Kerwynn Williams.
Robinson was dismissed from Arizona's staff following the 2012-13 NFL season.
