Radius-TWC buys rights to distribute 'Cutie and the Boxer'

Even with the 2013 Sundance Film Festival completed, the dealmaking continues.

Today, Radius-TWC (the video-on-demand/theatrical arm of The Weinstein Company) announced it was picking up North American and French rights to "Cutie and the Boxer," Zachary Heinzerling's sweet documentary about Japanese-born "action painter" Ushio Shinohara and his wife Noriko, who late in life comes into her own as an artist. Heinzerling won the Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary competition.

It was the fifth title Radius-TWC picked up at Sundance this year. It also bought rights to the backup-singer documentary "Twenty Feet From Stardom"; Stacie Passon's sexually charged drama "Concussion"; the porn biopic "Lovelace"; and the documentary "Inequality For All," in which Robert Reich explains the economy.

• Also over the weekend, Oscilloscope Laboratories picked up North American rights to "Mother of George." Andrew Dosunmu's drama centered on a Nigerian immigrant family, in which the wife (Danai Gurira) is desperate to give her husband (Isaach de Bankole) a child. The movie was honored for its cinematography by Bradford Young (who also shot this year's Sundance entry "Ain't Them Bodies Saints").

• And, as if to prove that it's never too late to sign a Sundance movie, 108 Media/Paladin signed the rights to distribute "Valley of Saints," Musa Syeed's drama from last year's festival. The movie, which won the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award and the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, tells of a ferryboat operator whose plans to leave his village are interrupted by a curfew — but the arrival of a beautiful scientist studying his lake makes things more bearable.
