Utah art galleries open exhibits tied to Sundance films

Usually, finding an open art gallery during the Sundance Film Festival is a challenge, since many of them rent out their space to corporate sponsors for party locations during the festival.

But two galleries — one in Park City and one in Salt Lake City — are displaying art connected to films playing at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

In Park City, the Julie Nester Gallery (at 1280 Iron Horse Drive) is displaying pictures by war photographer Tim Hetherington, taken in Afghanistan and Liberia. Hetherington was killed in April 2011 while covering the Libyan uprising. Journalist Sebastian Junger, who co-directed the Afghan war documentary "Restrepo" (which opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival), has directed a new documentary, "Which Way Is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington," playing in the festival's Documentary Premieres section. The exhibit opens today, and runs through Jan. 30.

In Salt Lake City, the Central Utah Art Center has scheduled an exhibition and live performance by Japanese painter Ushio Shinohara, the "boxing painter" whose work and marriage are profiled in the U.S. Documentary competition film "Cutie and the Boxer." The exhibit will be open Friday, Jan. 18, fro 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 19, from noon to 4 p.m., at 175 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City. Admission is free.
