Another RSL Road Draw Looks Even Better Than the Last One

If coach Jason Kreis and his RSL team was pleased with its draw in Kansas City last weekend, it had to be doubly so with the same 1-1 result against the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park tonight.

Not only did the team once again bounce back after allowing an early goal, but this time it did it with a make-shift lineup that included goalkeeper Kyle Reynish making his first career start.

“Credit to all those players,” Kreis said. “I thought they all fought very hard, and put in the necessary energy and necessary commitment that we ask of our players. At the end of the day, that's what we ask for. We ask for their best, and results aside, if we get their best, we're pleased.”

Kreis started six players who usually don't feature in the starting lineup, and certainly not all at once. In addition to Reynish, forward Pablo Campos also earned the start, along with midfielders Nelson Gonzalez and Jean Alexandre and defenders Tony Beltran and Rauwshan McKenzie.

The team did not even use midfielder Kyle Beckerman, and forward Alvaro Saborio was away playing for Costa Rica and unavailable. Fellow forward Robbie Findley played some, as did midfielder Will Johnson, but only as second-half substitutes. Kreis acknowledged worrying that he might have been making too many changes at once, but came away satisfied that his team is just as deep as he has always believed.

“We did a great job of hanging in there,” defender Chris Wingert said. “I give so much credit to our guys for sticking with it and scoring a good goal … battling the rest of the match and earning another tough one point. We're more than happy with the last two results.”

Wingert was less than happy, however, with the flying elbow that the Union's Michael Orozco Fiscal threw at his throat just before halftime.

“If they see it, he has to be out at least a couple of games” under a suspension, Wingert said. “I don't know if they can see it, if the camera caught it. But for sure, that would be three games.”
