RSL Youth Side Aiming for Another SUM Cup Title

While RSL gets back to training today without Javier Morales, Jamison Olave and Nick Rimando, its Under-17 team is playing in the semi-finals of the annual SUM Cup in Houston, where Morales, Olave and Rimando will play in the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night.

The U-17 side beat Kansas City 2-0 in a 70-minute game last night to earn the semi-final berth, and will play the Houston Dynamo's youth team tonight for the right to advance to the championship on Thursday against either Columbus or D.C. United. While RSL won the tournament in 2008, United won in both 2007 and 2009.

The winner will qualify for the Clubes de Mundial Sub-18 tournament in Madrid next spring.

Meanwhile, the senior RSL team figures to get a better idea of which team could join its group for the CONCACAF Champions League next month, after Toronto FC and CD Motagua of Panama play in the first leg of their preliminary series tonight at BMO Field in Toronto.

The winner of the series will join RSL, Cruz Azul of Mexico and Arabe Unido in the group stage next month.
