Return of RSL's Beckerman Still Clouded by Uncertainty

Midfielder Kyle Beckerman seems to have backed off a bit in his recovery from a torn tendon in his foot, and coach Jason Kreis acknowledged today it could be several weeks before the captain is back in the lineup.

"Anything's possible," he said.

Beckerman mostly just jogged around the practice field, after participating in full-contact drills last week. Kreis noted that it's most important for RSL to have him back at full strength in August, when its schedule grows increasingly daunting because of its first foray into the CONCACAF Champions League. It doesn't hurt that RSL is 4-0-2 since Beckerman was injured against Chivas USA.

“From our point of view, we have no reason to pressure him into coming back before he's ready,” Kreis said.

It seems unlikely then that Beckerman will travel with RSL to play the Chicago Fire on Thursday night in a nationally televised rematch with the team it stunned on penalties in the MLS Eastern Conference final last season. Midfielder Ned Grabavoy seems to have staked a claim to that spot in Beckerman's absence, having started the last three games after young midfielder Jean Alexandre was given a couple of chances.
