The Sundance Institute is expanding its global reach, with a version of the Sundance Film Festival launching this fall in Hong Kong.
Sundance Film Festival — Hong Kong Selects will bring eight titles from this year's Sundance Film Festival for their Hong Kong premieres over two weekends between Sept. 19 and Sept. 28, the institute announced Friday morning.
The eight films, accompanied by a delegation of filmmakers and festival organizers, will be screened at The Metroplex, a newly opened cineplex in Hong Kong's Kowloon Bay. The event is also supported by the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau.
"In our effort to share the best of American independent film with audiences outside the U.S., Hong Kong seemed an excellent location with a rich cinematic history," said John Cooper, the Sundance Film Festival's director, in a statement. "In partnership with The Metroplex, we look forward to presenting a program of diverse and high quality American independent films."
The line-up for the Hong Kong program will be announced in mid-August.
The Hong Kong event is not the first extension of the original Sundance Film Festival, held in January in Park City, Utah. The Sundance London Film and Music Festival marked its third year in April, and the Sundance NEXT FEST will have its second edition Aug. 7-10 in Los Angeles.
