LGBT community center day on Wednesday

The Utah Pride Center, on Wednesday, will celebrate National Community Center Awareness Day, an event that promotes the services offered by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community centers nationwide.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker plans to declare Sept. 15 as "National Community Center Awareness Day." The Utah Pride Center is located at 361 N. 300 West in Salt Lake City.

The center has organized a number of events to mark the day. All activities are at the center, unless otherwise noted:

Community service project • Drop off a donation or volunteer at Capitol West Boys & Girls Club, 567 W. 300 North, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will be collecting basketballs, soccer balls, backpacks and school supplies. And carpenters are carving two new wooden benches for the club.

Open house • Check out the Utah Pride Center and learn about programs offered, 4 to 8 p.m.

Chili cook-off • Taste chili, for $3 a bowl, prepared by LGBT groups, including the pride center, Equality Utah, People with AIDS Coalition of Utah and the Utah AIDS Foundation, from 5 to 8 p.m. The winning organization gets to keep the proceeds from the cook-off.

Proclamation • Jennifer Mayer-Glenn of the Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission will read Mayor Becker's proclamation at 7 p.m.
