Jazz sign rookies Burke, Gobert day before summer league

Orlando, Fla. • The Utah Jazz announced Saturday that they have signed first-round draft picks Trey Burke and Rudy Gobert.

The moves come one day before the team participates in the Orlando Pro Summer League, which begins Sunday at Amway Center with a game against the Miami Heat at 11 a.m. MT. The game can be seen on NBA TV. Both players are expected to see heavy minutes.

Burke, 20, was the ninth pick in the draft and was acquired by the Jazz on draft night in a deal that sent the No. 14 and 21 picks to Minnesota in exchange for Burke. Gobert was acquired hours later from Denver. The 27th pick was sent to the Jazz for pick No. 46 and an undisclosed amoung of cash.

Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed. However, according to the rookie pay scale, the Jazz can pay Burke up to 120 percent of $2,032,300 and Gobert up to 120 percent of 899,000. Both contracts will be guaranteed for two years, with team options in years three and year.

Burke was the consensus national college player of the year at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to the NCAA championship game before losing to Louisville. he averaged 18.6 points and 6.7 assists per game, and his 255 assists set a single-season school record.

Gobert spent last season with Cholet Basket of the French League, where he averaged 8.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots. In order to sign him, the Jazz had to negotiate a buyout with Gobert's team in France and also earn FIBA clearance.
