Luke Babbitt was on the Jazz's radar screen prior to last summer's NBA draft, but Utah ended up using the No. 9 pick on Butler's Gordon Hayward.Babbitt slipped to No. 16, where the Trail Blazers grabbed the good-shooting small forward from Nevada.Babbitt did not play in the Jazz's 100-96 preseason victory over Portland on Thursday night, but he is optimistic that he landed in the right place to launch a success professional career."It's going well," Babbitt said before the Jazz-Blazer game. "There is great competition going on. This is a very deep team and there are so many vets taking the young guys under their wing. ... I'm just trying to do what I can right now to help the team."On draft night, Babbitt said he was " ... just hoping to get picked. I knew Utah had a high pick, but I was just sweating to hear my name called — hoping to get picked by somebody. And I was really happy when Portland picked me. It's a great team, as are the Jazz. So I knew I couldn't go wrong."When Babbitt came to Utah for his pre-draft workout, he talked about Nevada's heated basketball Western Athletic Conference rivalry with Utah State. This fall, however, the Wolf Pack football team is undefeated. If it can stay that way and beat Boise State in November, Nevada could be in position to bust into a BCS bowl game.Asked if he was following Nevada's exploits in football, Babbitt laughed and said, "Top 25, and they have a favorable schedule the rest of the way. They get Boise at home so, yeah, they could go undefeated."— Steve Luhm
