Jonathan Wood likes hiking buddies.

"My friends aren't really into hiking and stuff like I am," Wood said. "So I am actually looking for people I can go hiking with."

Wood, (See the attached photo) a software developer from Salt Lake City, has created Trail Calendar. It's a social networking website where people across the world can announce when and where they are hiking.

Select Utah and Salt Lake City as your location, for example, and you'll see a hike planned for Friday in Neffs Canyon. You can RSVP and post pictures.

Trail Calendar hasn't received a lot of Web traffic yet. As of Tuesday night, the only Salt Lake City planned hikes for the remainder of October were two posted by Wood. There are no postings for Provo or southern Utah.

Wood said much of his activity thus far have come from hikers in the Twin Tiers region of New York and Pennsylvania and hikers in California's San Bernardino Mountains.

"It''s definitely not enough yet to make it a good site," Wood said. "This could be really cool but it would take people using it."

Wood said he has put "thousands" of dollars into the site, some of which went into buying advertisements on Facebook. He has sold ads on Trail Calendar to try to recoup that money, but he does not expect to turn a profit.

Wood, who turns 49 years old this month, said he spent much of his life overweight and hikes to exercise. Since 2007, he's lost half his body weight, he said. Wood prefers hikes on the Oquirrh and Wasatch mountains where he can take a dog.

"It's basically a fitness thing for me so I want to go every week," Wood said.
