Green River Fishing Report for April 9th, 2013Flows remain steady around 800Hatches: Lots of Midges and BWO'sThe BWO hatch continues to get bigger each day. They are not river wide yet, but there are a lot of BWO's on the lower A and upper B. There are plenty of rising fish in the afternoons, especially when there is cloud cover. I have not noticed a lot fish up on midges, but there are some. Most of the fish are still keyed on emergers. Remember, if you see splashy rises those are emerger eats. Streamer fishing has tapered off. We still hit a few last week, but it hasn't been what is was. That is typical as the fish begin to focus more on the hatches.
I had lunch with DWR fisheries biologist Matt Mckell who has been running the data from last September survey. He raved about the size and health of the fish. They have a formula that shows appropriate fat content on fish. If a fish is a 1 it is considered to be in great shape. Matt said that some of the fish were as high as a 1.8. That's nearly twice as fat!! Let's hope that continues and that Mother Nature will help us out with some more water.
We broke a couple of pike off, or better said, a couple of pike cut through our line last week. Remember there is a catch a kill order on these fish. They are not a species we want to see a lot of. We had a moose cross the river in front of us on the water and the otters have been more visible as well. It's always fun to see wildlife as part of a great fishing day.
In the pics this week I included a great bow we caught on a black sculpin, an average sized B section brown, a good A section brown caught on a BWO, and a Green River Parabaetis (a great choice for picky fish). Get out and enjoy the Spring hatches. Ryan
