BYU is probably a month away from announcing its 2013-14 men's basketball schedule, but today we learned the Cougars' opener will be against instate rival Weber State. The Wildcats released their nonconference schedule, which includes a Nov. 9 game against BYU in Provo. That's the same day BYU's football team will be in Madison, Wis., to take on Gary Andersen's Badgers. Kickoff time and television plans for the BYU-Wisconsin football game have not be announced, but it will presumably be played around 11 a.m. MDT and the basketball game will likely tip off at 7 p.m. It will be the second time in three years that BYU has opened a basketball season against an instate foe. In 2011, BYU opened at Utah State. As mentioned in this blog last week, Massachusetts has said it will meet BYU on Dec. 7 in Springfield, Mass. The game at the MassMutual Center begins a home-and-home series between the Cougars and Minutemen.———————— In other BYU basketball-related news, junior shooting guard Tyler Haws has been selected to try out for the USA Basketball World University Games team. Some 29 college players will try out, beginning June 24 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A 12-man roster will be selected and Davidson coach Bob McKillop will coach the squad. Also, Haws was named the fourth-best shooting guard in college basketball last week by The Sporting News.
