OK, it's official. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall has grown tired of talking about the quarterback situation. After politely answering about eight or nine questions on the quarterbacks in an eight-minute chat with reporters after practice tonight, Mendenhall had finally had enough when he was asked about what he would consider to be an ideal situation to put freshman Jake Heaps into this week. "I really don't have any more comments about the quarterbacks," Mendenhall said brusquely. "I can't articulate it any more clearly. When I know, I will express it more clearly. But right now, this is as good as I can tell you." Prior to that, Mendenhall pretty much repeated what he had said in Tuesday morning's MWC teleconference. He did say that Heaps and Riley Nelson are still getting an equal amount of reps in practice. "And again, our intent as we are continuing to build parameters around what each quarterback does the best, where he will fit in the game [continues]. Now there becomes more purpose to when a quarterback goes in, and why, rather than just every other series. We would like their skill-set to help define that, based on situations. Again, it is a work in progress. I am not ready to give you yet the parameters, the box they will fit into, but that's the direction we are going." Mendenhall said in the teleconference that Nelson will take the first snap against the Seminoles. Asked if there is a situation down the road where Heaps could start, he said, "Maybe. I mean, we have only played two games. He's a very talented player, so anything is possible right now with the quarterbacks." ——————————- Perhaps the biggest news to come out of practice was that starting inside linebacker Brandon Ogletree suffered an MCL sprain against Air Force and is questionable for the FSU game. Mendenhall said if Ogletree can't go, it will be a close call between Aveni Leung-Wai and Austen Jorgensen to be his replacement at buck linebacker. "Aveni Leung-Wai is really kind of making a push. We didn't play him last week versus Air Force as he was struggling with assignments, maybe moreso than others. But [FSU] is more of a conventional offense, and he had a pretty good grasp when he started against Washington, and so it will be either he or Austen Jorgensen. And I would probably lean, as of today, to Aveni."—————————— Trainer Kevin Morris called Ogletree "day-to-day" with the sprain. He said Romney Fuga, McKay Jacobson and Matt Reynolds came out of the AFA game briefly, but returned to action. Jacobson had the win knocked out of him and Reynolds was cramping. Reynolds, by the way, was so ill on Thursday and Friday that he needed four bags of IV fluid in order to play. Morris said it was incredibly gutty for Reynolds to play.
