Junior quarterback Riley Nelson will start for BYU against Florida State on Saturday, coach Bronco Mendenhall said during the Mountain West Conference coaches teleconference this morning. "Riley will still get the first snap," Mendenhall said. "And really from there, we have never guaranteed whoever gets the first snap will end up playing the most. It has worked out that way in the past couple of weeks, but that doesn't mean it will be the way it will always be." Regarding the overall quarterback rotation system, Mendenhall repeated what he said on Monday: that it will be determined more by situations than a set procedure. "It is still a work in progress. But it will most likely take on a little bit more situational emphasis rather than the every-other-series approach that we were starting with," he said. "As we continue to see more and more how they handle themselves with the team in practice and in game situations, and can identify, again, situations that we really think our suited to one or the other, I think you will see kind of a more specialized approach that way. Again, too early to say exactly how it is going to play out. But conceptually, that is what I am thinking." The coach was asked which situations he is most comfortable playing Nelson in, and which lend themselves to Heaps' strengths. "I am most comfortable with Riley sustaining drives, using his legs, especially using play action off of that. And critical times in the game he is very poised and mature. Jake at this point, his ability to throw the football, his field vision, and just the type of accurate passer he is as a pure talent. I would say those would be the best ways to describe it," he said.——————————————- The Western Athletic Conference just released the following news release regarding its pending lawsuit against the MWC, Fresno State and Nevada:WAC Seeks Judicial Determination Regarding Departure Date DENVER - Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson announced today that in order to protect the WAC, WAC member institutions and its student-athletes, the WAC is seeking a judicial determination as to the date that Fresno State and the University of Nevada Reno may terminate their membership with the WAC.The WAC has maintained — consistent with the bylaws — that these institutions may not depart the WAC until June 30, 2012. However, through both direct communication with individuals at both schools and media reports, Fresno State and University of Nevada Reno have indicated an intention to terminate their membership with the WAC prior to the date allowed by the bylaws.Due to the irreparable injury such early withdrawal would cause to the WAC, a judicial determination is required in the near future. Additionally, as communications occurred regarding the Mountain West Conference's desire to schedule conference play with Fresno State and University of Nevada Reno prior to June 30, 2012, the WAC is also seeking injunctive relief from such action. "The WAC is simply seeking to protect its interests and insure that all member institutions are protected from a potential and threatened violation of the bylaws." said Benson. "Such inappropriate action would make it impossible for member institutions to schedule athletic events and thereby would adversely affect the WAC, the WAC member institutions and the student-athletes."
