The Salt Lake Symphony will present a concert on Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 pm at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on President's Circle on the University of Utah campus. L
Led by guest conductor and well-known author Gerald Elias, the orchestra will perform music of Eastern Europe, including two classics and a world premiere.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance by calling 801-792-1313.
From a press release:The Bartok Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and first performed in 1944. If the Concerto for Orchestra is a symphony infused with the melodies and dance rhythms of Bartok's native country, Hungary, the same can be said of the inspiration for the "Romanian Rhapsody #1" by George Enescu, a veritable tour de force for orchestra. In between these two full-orchestra pieces, the Salt Lake Symphony string section will present the premiere of "Adagio in the Romantic Style" by Igor Iachimciuc. A native of the Republic of Moldova, Iachimciuc is a faculty member of the University of Utah. Elias, former associate concertmaster of the Utah Symphony for 23 years, is also an acclaimed author. In partnership with King's English Bookstore, conductor Gerald Elias will sign copies of his books in the lobby and donate the royalties to the Salt Lake Symphony guest artist fund.The Salt Lake Symphony's pre-concert discussion series will precede the concert at 6:15 in Room 270 in Gardner Hall, just behind the auditorium. The discussion focuses on the historical and cultural events surrounding the music that will be performed.
