The Salt Lake City Main Library has been abuzz this summer — and not just with people reading.

Beehives were installed in the Main Library's Rooftop Garden in June by hobbyist beekeeper Frank Whitby and volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 202. Throughout the summer, Whitby and the troops maintained the two towering hives, cultivating 150 pounds of honey.

On Labor Day weekend, Whitby harvested the honey and entered a portion into the Utah State Fair.

The remaining honey will be baked into treats and shared Sept. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. during the Honey Harvest Celebrations at all six library locations. Beekeepers and Boy Scouts will be available at the celebrations to answer questions and share their beekeeping experiences.

The hives will remain on the Rooftop Garden as weather permits. The public can see the hives from the staircase between Level 4 and 5.
