Dannon giving grants to help nutrition education

The Dannon Co. is taking applications for its Next Generation Nutrition Grants, which range from $25,000 to $30,000 and are awarded to programs that support childhood nutrition education.

The grants are available to organizations in four communities where its has operations - Salt Lake County; Auglaize County, Ohio; Tarrant County, Texas; and Westchester County, N.Y.

Organizations must be a 501(c)3 nonprofit to qualify and have a nutrition education program in place for youths 18 and younger.

Applications are due May 15.

Wingstop holding event to find franchisees

Wingstop, a national franchise known for cooked-to-order chicken wings, is set to expand to the Salt Lake City area.

A recruiter will host an event March 21 and 22 at Marriott University Park, 480 Wakara Way, to meet with prospective franchisees.

Wingstop has expanded to midsized and large markets in 27 states. The company has more than 450 restaurants either open or under development.

Number of farms in Utah, nation suffers decline

The number of farms in Utah and across the nation has declined, reflecting a continuing consolidation of farming operations and the development of agricultural land.

In Utah in 2006, 100 farms were lost, dropping the number of operations to 15,100.

The average farm size, at 768 acres, was up by 5 acres from the previous year, according to the Utah Agricultural Statistics Service's March report.

Nationwide, the number of farms is estimated at 2.09 million for 2006, about 0.4 percent fewer than the year before.

Total land in farms, at 932 million acres, decreased by 780,000 acres from the previous year. The size of the average U.S. farm was 446 acres, an increase of one acre from the pervious year.
