LOGAN - The renegade mayor strikes again. No, it's not Salt Lake City's Rocky Anderson railing against liquor laws or the Legislature. It's Logan's Randy Watts.

Last year, the freshman mayor dumped this northern Utah city's dated nativity scene into the landfill. Now, he plans to replace Logan's longtime logo with a more modern model. And he is braced for a backlash.

But he won't get any guff from Julie Hollist, director of the Cache Valley Visitors Bureau.

Hollist said she understands the need to update images or logos from time to time.

Logan's current logo - depicting City Hall and Utah State University's Old Main - was designed by Benson resident Eva Nelson, wife of then-Logan Police Chief Alan Nelson, in the mid-1990s, according to former Mayor Darla Clark.

“We needed some kind of a logo that was consistent within the city because we didn't have that,” Clark said.

In recent years, though, minor changes to the design prompted repeated complaints from the artist to city officials, which Clark said may be partly why Watts is pushing for the change.

Right now, Logan's departments - such as police, fire and light and power - have their own logo variations.

The city has hired North Logan's Digital Slant Creative Group to create a brochure and update the city's Internet site and logo for an estimated $32,000, Watts said. The finished project will be unveiled in April or May.
