Prison should be punitive
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2006, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

Why do prison inmates get treated as if they were at home? Let me clarify. The inmates get to watch cable TV, they get to go outside with free time, and they get to work out when they can get the same amount of exercise picking litter up off of roads or highways.

Why is all of this when, really, isn't the point of prison to get punished for criminal acts? They need to learn their lesson. What are taxpayers paying for? The prisoners' cable TV expenses? That should stop. I mean, the money that goes to the prison is needed in public schools, or even can help pay for shelters for the homeless. I ask you, what would you rather pay for? Prisoners watching cable TV or schools, homeless shelters or many other state-related items?
