BYU stifles students

I am writing to praise those students brave enough to stage a protest at Brigham Young University over the recent firing of BYU Student Leadership Coordinator Todd Hendricks (Tribune, March 31).

As a former BYU student (I left because of things like this), I'm fully aware of the lengths the administration and the LDS Church will go to stifle any difference of opinion or freethinking from within the ranks.

I find it amazing that BYU would fire a faculty member who, according to his last performance review, met or exceeded all expectations. I guess that was before he was expected to keep his mouth shut about what many consider the unethical and unfair conduct rampant in the BYU Student Association. Especially telling was this quote from BYUSA President Adam Larsen: “A person attacking BYUSA is essentially attacking itself since BYUSA represents the students' interests.” It seems BYUSA and BYU as a whole need a large dose of reality.
