Local Sports: MLS team to unveil name next week
The nickname, logo and colors of Salt Lake City's new Major League Soccer franchise will be made public at a 1 p.m. announcement at an open house Oct. 9 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The open house, from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m., will include two Utah Youth Soccer Organization games, team merchandise sales, season-ticket sales, and a chance to win a trip to the 2004 MLS Cup.
Utes, Smith honored: The Utah women's team and junior forward Kim Smith are lauded by Street & Smith's and Lindy's Sports, which have released their preseason publications. Street & Smith's rates Utah No. 24 and includes Smith in its Terrific 10 Preseason All-America team. Lindy's has Utah at No. 25 and has Smith as a preseason All-America second-teamer.
Assistant quits: Utah State women's assistant coach John Bartleson resigned effective immediately to "pursue other interests." He was with the team since July 2002.
Cougar wins: Josh Rohatinsky won the 8K in 23 minutes, 40 seconds to help BYU finish fifth in the Notre Dame Invitational in Indiana. For the women, BYU's Laura Turner finished fourth in the 6K at 17:04.55 in the Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina. The Cougars took fourth in the team standings.
Salazar No. 6: WrestlingUSA magazine published a national ranking of high-school freshman and sophomore wrestlers online at http://www.wrestlingusa.com. Jacob Salazar, a 125-pound freshman from Wasatch High, is ranked No. 6. Sophomore Sean Porter of Davis was No. 10 at 125 pounds.
Stone wins tourney: Judge Memorial's Natalie Stone shot a 72 to win the Girls' Individual High School Championship at Davis Park Golf Course in Fruit Heights. Juan Diego's Heidi Kim was second with a 79 in a scorecard playoff with East's Brook Stewart (third) and Lone Peak's Selu Fotu (fourth).
BYU in fifth: BYU men's team is in fifth place entering today's final round of the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Cougars shot a 3-over 579.
