But not even the entrance of the league's fourth-leading career scorer in the 67th minute of Saturday's game could spark Toronto to put one of 24 shots past goalkeeper Nick Rimando, whose brilliant saves helped short-handed RSL steal a point in the scoreless draw.
The 0-0 result in front of 20,098 left Toronto coach Mo Johnston shaking his head and RSL coach Jason Kreis feeling "very sorry for Toronto," a team now scoreless in nine games.
"They were obviously the better team tonight and created a lot of chances," Kreis said. "There's not a whole lot positive I can say about our team's game tonight except for the fact that we fought very, very hard."
RSL remains two points behind Toronto and second-worst in the overall standings after getting just one point in its "make or break" three-game road trip.
"We came into this game feeling like there was 21 points on the table [over the rest of the season] and we were probably going to need to get all 21 of them to have a very realistic shot at the playoffs," Kreis said. "Now we're going to need probably a couple of teams to falter for us to have a chance."
RSL's chances of winning were dealt a heavy blow in the 38th minute when midfielder Fabian Espindola was ejected. Espindola threw an elbow at Toronto's Marvelle Wynne after taking Wynne down with a hard foul.
Toronto fired 13 shots on net to RSL's one and Rimando had to rely on his reflexes and some luck to turn away point-blank shots from Wynne, Andreas Lombardo and Todd Dunivant.
"Nick Rimando, in my eyes, has been so good that I think we should give him two MVP trophies," Kreis said.
RSL returns home, where it will be joined by forward Yura Movsisyan, acquired before the trade deadline Friday in a deal with the Kansas City Wizards. RSL also gets a Youth International roster spot but gives up two draft picks and player allocation in return.
