WOODS CROSS - The Wildcats are due. This sentiment was shared by many throughout the Woods Cross dugout heading into Tuesday's showdown with rival Bountiful. And who could blame them - nine of their 12 losses have come via two runs or less this season. But in the bottom of the seventh inning, they pondered no more as the ball finally bounced their way with Louis Morales' weak two-RBI infield single capping a 5-4 comeback win over the Braves.
"I can't think of a better way to leave in my senior year [Woods Cross' final home game]," the second baseman said. "I was keeping my eye on the ball, then saw a slider down and away coming and swung."
It was a long inning to say the least for Bountiful closer Jason Whittaker. With two out, Taylor Hood and Bretton Moosman advanced to scoring position after the junior's costly wild pitch went toward the backstop, giving way to Morales' game-winning hit that led to an errant throw from shortstop Tanner Herrick to Evan Parry at first.
Morales said that he's never run faster in his life, adding he had to get to first base safely at all costs. With the win, Woods Cross (7-9, 8-12 overall) closes to within a a half game of Bountiful (7-10, 7-14) for the fourth seed in the playoffs from Region 5.
"It's our biggest win of the season," senior Taylor Hood said. "No matter how things looked, we remained confident we could pull it out."
