PARK CITY - The Miners didn't want to take any team lightly in the Class 3A soccer tournament.
Even though Park City never trailed Juan Diego in its quarterfinal game Saturday, a win wasn't guaranteed. It wasn't until the referee blew the final whistle and the scoreboard read 2-0 in Park City's favor that the Miners finally felt relieved.
"No, that [lead] didn't [make us feel comfortable]," said Brian Johnson, who scored Park City's second goal in the 49th minute. "We didn't want to let anything get into our heads."
Park City, for the most part, controlled possession of the ball from the beginning by utilizing its size and footwork.
The Miners were rewarded in about the sixth minute, when Tucker Sheppard knocked the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal. But, after that, Park City coach Caro Caro wasn't pleased with his team's effort.
"We needed to play on the ground, control the midfield and have the forwards keep pressure," Caro said. "They did that for the first 15 minutes, and a goal resulted from it, but then they let loose. They didn't have the intensity that I wanted."
Even though the Miners didn't play as dominantly as Caro would have liked, Park City had chances to make the lead even bigger. The Miners had three shots that hit either a post or the crossbar.

"They're a young team," Park City defender Tommy Martin said. "In the future, they're going to be a good team, for sure."
As for the present, Park City's focus will now be turned to Uintah, which will be its next opponent in the semifinals on Friday at Timpview.
"This team can rise to the occasion. These guys do know how to compete, they've proven it to me," Caro said. "Even though they were complacent, in this game, you can see the potential this team has."
