Heading into Friday's game, the East and Highland boys' soccer teams were tied for the second in Region 6.

Following Highland's 4-1 road win over the Leopards, however, the Rams have not only overtaken that second slot, but also hold temporary bragging rights over their long-time rival.

So, it was not a surprise that Friday's game turned out to be heated battle between the two evenly matched teams as tempers flared and red cards flew throughout the game.

"Last year, we got thrown around a bit," said Highland coach Eric Bliss. "This year, I said, 'Don't talk. Don't whine. Give them the index finger and be on your way.' "

The strategy seemed to pay off for the Rams, as Highland's Fernando Frias scored early on a free kick and freshman James Rogers knocked in another to put the Rams up 2-0 at the half.

Rogers scored again in the opening minutes of the second half to put the Rams up 3-0, but East answered just minutes later, knocking one in just over the fingertips of Highland goalie Luis Escobar.

East continued to press and had its chances in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome Highland's momentum and the tight defense of Eric Cortez in front of the goal.

Down by two late in the second half, the Leopards let their frustrations come to the surface and were handed three red cards in the closing minutes. Meanwhile, Highland's Fernando Luna capped off the win with a goal in the final seconds, adding to the sting of East's loss at home.
