That would be a tough feat, as the Cougars racked up 400 total offensive yards against the Bulldogs the last time the two teams met. Union quarterback Rhen Richard threw three touchdown passes and ran two in himself.
"They have one of the best quarterbacks in the state," Judge's Bruce Garlinghouse said after the Bulldogs beat Union 49-20 at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Friday. "He almost beat us by himself last time."
But the Judge Memorial defense made sure that wasn't the case Friday. Although Richard was never sacked in the semifinal game - the closest Judge got was when Auti Takai flew over the top of Richard, but he stood up and threw a wounded-duck pass - he was pressured into bad passes all game long.
Even though Richard did pass for 424 yards and two touchdown passes, he completed just 22 of 51 passes and threw three interceptions.
"We put the fear into his eyes," Takai said. "We made him struggle."
Takai was part of a defense that held Union to half of what it scored against the Bulldogs last time, forced three Union fumbles and kept the Cougars to their lowest point total of the playoffs. More importantly, the defense limited Union to just 43 rushing yards.
The Bulldogs got a boost from George Heimuli, who didn't play in the last game against Union.
"We haven't had him all season," Judge coach James Cordova said. "[But, now] we have big George Heimuli in there and he gives us a big push up the middle."
It is just his second game this season but Heimuli has made the most of it.
"We started the game a little tight. One of our coaches said, 'Who cares about the quarterback? Concentrate on beating the guy in front of you,' " Heimuli said. "We just couldn't wait to play this game. Payback."
