Class 5-A Boys: This time around, Riverton able to hang on

WEST VALLEY CITY - Of the many things that separate this year's Riverton boys' basketball team from the past two, one stood out above the rest on Monday: The Silverwolves' top players came through in clutch situations.

Riverton junior Morgan Grim posted 35 points and nine rebounds, and Mike Larsen added 17 points and 12 rebounds in the team's 66-63 overtime win over Fremont in the first round of the Class 5-A tournament at the E Center. After losing in the first round the last two seasons, Riverton dealt with some adversity Monday and appears poised to hang around for a few days.

Riverton blew a 19-point first-half lead, was tied by Fremont twice in regulation, and even briefly fell behind in overtime. That's when players such as Grim and Larsen made sure Riverton wasn't going home early again.

"What do you as a coach in that situation?" Silverwolves coach Steve Galley asked. "Your best players have got to make plays. We made just enough plays to win the game."

Riverton made all of the game's plays in the first half. The Silverwolves opened the game on an 11-0 run, holding Fremont scoreless for nearly seven minutes. Back-to-back three-pointers by Larsen and Tyson Higgins gave Riverton a 28-9 lead midway through the second quarter.

But Fremont came back. It got Riverton's lead down to nine at the end of the third quarter and kept chipping away in the fourth. Austin Raught made two foul shots with 2:28 remaining to tie the game 57-57. Riverton mostly ran out the rest of regulation before missing a three-point attempt as time expired.

Galley credited Fremont's comeback to two factors: Raught's play in the second half, and that his players stopped playing inside-out with the 6-foot-7 Grim.

"[Fremont] played as good as any team in the state in the last month," Galley said. "It was probably unlikely we were going to keep a huge cushion against them."

In overtime, Riverton got back to pounding the ball inside to Grim, who sank two close-range baskets in the extra session. After his team fell behind by a point, Larsen made the game's biggest shot - a three-pointer - to put the Silverwolves in the lead, 62-60.

Fremont had the last possession of the game, but failed to get a shot before time expired.

Riverton point guard Eric Dearden returned to action after missing the team's regular-season finale against West Jordan. He sprained his ankle less than two weeks ago, and his status was questionable. Like his fellow key players for Riverton, he came through in a big spot with seven points and seven assists.

"It was a boost having him in there," Larsen said.

Riverton appears to be set up for a good tournament run. It faces Skyline, Region 2's fourth-place team, in the quarterfinals. The Silverwolves say they won't be looking past Wednesday.

"All you do is try and win your next game," Galley said. "I know this: Skyline plays incredible defense."
