The best high school tennis players in the state will have a chance to remove the asterisk that some would say accompanies their state championships, thanks to an inter-class, invite-only tournament the week after all state tournaments end.

The event, to be called the Tennis Tournament of Champions, is May 20-21 at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy in Salt Lake City. Though the first-time event, sponsored by Zions Bank, is not sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association, the organization supports it.

The top two finishers from each of the five slots -- Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles and Nos. 1 and 2 doubles -- from each class are invited. Five ''super state champions" will be named at the conclusion of the two-day tournament.

"I thought it would be nice to have an overall state champion at the end of the year," said Dwight Marchant, whose son plays for Olympus and participated in the 4-A state tournament a year ago. Marchant, who works for Zions, asked the bank to sponsor the tournament. It said yes, and Mike Martines of Coach Mike's agreed to host the event.

There could be marquee matchups all over -- provided players such as Fletcher Keyes of Park City, Jake Davis of Northridge and the rest decide to play.

"It's up to the coaches' association to get them there," Marchant said.

The format will be similar to each of the four class tournaments, which finish up this weekend with the 3-A and 4-A events.

"We'll play two rounds Friday and then the semis and the finals Saturday," said Todd Neville, president of the Utah High School Tennis Coaches Association.

Brackets are in

Class 4-A and 5-A brackets were posted Monday, after each of the regions completed seeding play.

In Class 3-A, Park City took Region 10's top seed in each of the five spots. Fletcher Keyes, Park City's No. 1, and Pine View's Wesley Hancock, two of the state's best, both received No. 1 seeds. They were placed on opposite sides of the bracket and would not meet until the final.

In 4-A, Logan's Nate Ballam, Mountain View's Ammon Spencer, Jason Johnson of Timpview and Bryan Marchant of Olympus all earned No. 1 seeds.
