Fredsall, the defending 5-A butterfly champ, hadn't shaved her legs since October, so when she finally did this weekend her resistance in the water would be as little as possible.
"I shave my armpits, though,'' said Fredsall, quickly making sure she pointed out the difference.
The strategy, combined with a specific tapering program and Fredsall's past experience, all worked in her favor on Saturday afternoon at BYU's natatorium. The senior topped her time from last year by nearly a minute, finishing in 54.97 seconds.
Fredsall set a new Utah state record with the time, breaking Cottonwood's Heidi Hausknecht's mark of 55.63 set nearly 10 years ago, in 1996. The Utah-bound senior set two more state records later in the day, with the help of Kearns' relay swimmers, in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
"I felt like I died at the end but I looked over and I had it and I was so happy,'' Fredsall said of her butterfly swim.
The Kearns girls' team finished second overall, 140 points behind first-place Skyline (523 points), which won its' fourth consecutive 5-A team title. Skyline also took the boys' championship, finishing far ahead of second-place Kearns.
The Eagles were among the last to leave the pool, receiving trophies and a prolonged cheer from their supporters. Though neither side netted any state records, Skyline continued its impressive winning streak by attacking all spots in all races. The Eagle girls placed a swimmer in the top three of all of the weekend's races.
"They're really deep,'' Kearns coach Chris Horne said. "They get in there, in the top 12, all the time. They score lots of points.''
Skyline's K.C. Albiston won the girls' 500 free for the third time in as many years. Though she was two seconds off last year's time (5:04.01, a state record), she was pleased with the victory.
"I was going for it again,'' Said Albiston, who finished in 5:06.02. "I'm a little disappointed. But I've still got a lot to look forward to this season.''
Sara Nicoponski of Skyline finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.41, and on the boys' side, George Evans (100 free) and Drew Bowles (100 breaststroke) logged first-place finishes.
The Eagles also took both the 200 free relay (Evans, Andrew Zhang, Scott Goldthorpe, Jordan Jensen) and the 400 relay (Zac Smith, Thomas Ekstrom, Nathan Swallow and Evans).
Fredsall anchored both of Kearns' relays, but in the 200 free, all four swimmers who set a state mark in 2004 returned this year. Natalie Edge, Christie Bergesen, Trimbell Huff and Fredsall broke last year's record (1:37.87) by more than a second, finishing in 1:36.59.
And in the 400 free, three of the four swimmers on last year's team returned. Again, they bettered their time by more than a second, coming in at 3:32.07, 1.07 seconds better than last year's state record (3:33.14).
