It's an annual tradition at the Utah state basketball tournament: The epic quarterfinal that produces the best game of the tournament and totally shakes up the brackets.
Bingham found itself in the wrong end of this year's instant classic when the No. 1 Miners fell in overtime 71-70 to Fremont on the 5A state tournament's opening day at Weber State.
The highest-scoring affair of the both the Class 5A and 4A tournaments featured nine ties and 14 lead changes.
Bingham erased a four-point deficit in overtime and took a 67-66 lead with 1:34 remaining on a three-point play by Ben Clifford, but that would be the final Miner field goal until a meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer.
Ty Hanney led the Miners with 15 points, while Clifford added eight.
It was Bingham's first loss since an 68-63 loss to Olympus back on Dec. 15.
Copper Hills basketball
Davis knocked out Copper Hills in the semifinals, but the tournament proved to be a showcase for Steve Larson.
Larson's dominating 28-point game against West was one of the tournament's most impressive individual performances. It was his fifth-straight 20-point night and 12th of the season.
Larson's 17.8 scoring clip was fourth-best in 5A this season. The Grizzlies finished 16-9.
Alta basketball
One last look from the Hawk's state tournament run: Except for a three-minute stretch in the third quarter against Skyline, Alta never trailed in the final three games.
The Hawks also had great defensive starts. Skyline and Fremont managed just eight points in the first quarter in those games while Davis was held to a field goal in the opening eight minutes of the championship game.
Juan Diego baseball
Troy Davis' debut as Juan Diego baseball coach takes place Friday when the defending 3A state champions host Salem Hills. Davis replaced Steven Cramblitt, who stepped down from coaching responsibilities while remaining on as athletic director. Davis has been an assistant coach since 2007.
