Richfield » Bryce Valley earned its first state title in school history as the Mustangs beat Piute 53-48 in the Class 1A championship game Saturday.
The Mustangs won in dramatic fashion. The team's leading scorer, Kace Roundy, went out with his fifth foul with 7:11 remaining in the game. Kameron Roundy and Korde Chynoweth stepped up to score 15 of the team's 24 points in the fourth quarter.
"I turned to [Kace] and said 'I'm going to win this for you no matter what it takes,' " said Kameron Roundy. "I had guys step up and help me, and we played together as a team."
"I was worried," said Kace Roundy about picking up his fifth foul. "I've carried them this far is what [Kameron] told me, but he told me he was going to win this one for us, and he stepped up."
According to coach Eric Jessen, Kameron Roundy stepped up to lead Bryce Valley to victory with not only his offense, but also his defense, too. Kameron wanted a shot at shutting down Piute's leading scorer, Tyson Westwood. Roundy forced him to miss his last three jump shots in the fourth quarter.
"[Kameron] takes the attitude he wants their toughest guy," said Jessen. "He's the heart and soul of this team; he's the one that's helped us buy into playing harder defense."
With a 48-43 lead and 1:04 left to play, Bryce Valley's Eddie Dunham blocked a Piute shot and picked up the ensuing loose ball. Piute was forced to foul, and Bryce Valley hit five of its last eight free throws to close the game.
Bryce Valley allowed Westwood, to score 25 points, but none of his teammates scored more than seven. Piute shot 15-for-51 including 8-for-29 in the second half. Bryce Valley shot 16-for-36 from the field.
Kelton Price and Heath Payton each had seven for the Thunderbirds.
Bryce Valley was led by Kameron Roundy, who posted 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kace Roundy had 10 points and Korde Chynoweth added eight points, all coming in the fourth quarter. Every player who scored had at least six points.
"It was a great team win," said Jessen. "That's what it takes is a team; no individual wins these."
