Richfield » Bryce Valley advanced to its first championship game Friday night, beating Monticello 57-52 in the Class 1A Semifinals.
The Mustangs were down 40-34 with 5:29 left in the game and that was when Bryce Valley's Kace Roundy put the team on his shoulders. He had 15 of his team's 25 points in the fourth quarter to fuel the victory.
"He's as good as any kid in the state," said head coach Eric Jessen. "We had to come back and I told the kids we had to start attacking."
In a game where there were eight lead changes and three ties, it was Bryce Valley which had the most important lead change. Bryce Valley's Kace Roundy hit the go ahead basket with 4:27 left in the game to put the Mustangs ahead for good 42-40.
"The coaches told me 'if you get that shot, you hit it'," said Roundy. "They believe in me, the fans believe in me, and the team, too."
Roundy went to the bench with 5:55 remaining in the third with his fourth personal foul and his team down by four. The Mustangs were able to keep it close, however, as they only trailed 35-32 at the end of the period.
"I was nervous because I was scared they were going to get a big jump on us," Roundy said about heading to the bench. "I just sat and cheered and they pulled together strong."
Dallen Duncan led the way for the Buckaroos with a double-double as he had 16 points and 15 rebounds. Cory Young chipped in 12 points with six of those coming in the final minute to keep his team alive.
Roundy led the Mustang charge with 25 points and went 4-for-9 from the three point line. Tallan Chynoweth and Kam Roundy each contributed eight points in the win.

Tyson Westwood led the way for the Thunderbirds as he had 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.
"They [The Rebels] put the pressure on me and tried to get some steals," said Westwood. "I love that and made them pay for trying to gamble a little."
Piute had three players score in double figures led by Westwood. Kelton Price added 12 and Jaylen Christensen chipped in 15 including two big free throws with 26 seconds left to put the game away.
"[Westwood] came up to me and said 'much rather have you in there than me'," said Christensen. "So I just stepped up and did it."
Rich received a 23 point and nine rebound effort from Caden Andersen.
