Thirty-two minutes of basketball came down to one shot. As time expired in a Class 4A semifinal game, Christian Covey swished home a three-pointer to break a 44-all tie and send Timpview to the Class 4A championship game today against Mountain Crest.

When Covey's shot went in, the Dee Events Center broke out in pandemonium. Highland fans sat in stunned disbelief, while Timpview's fans went absolutely crazy over the 47-44 victory.

"That shot is definitely up there," said Timpview coach Perry Wildeboar. "I'd rank it in the top three shots of all-time in Timpview history."

The game was tightly contested throughout. Early on, Timpview attempted to push the tempo, while Highland was content with playing a slower half-court game. Highland got on a roll before halftime and led 24-23 at the break.

The third quarter saw Timpview get out to a quick start, scoring the first eight points of the second half, but Highland answered back with a 7-0 run of its own. The teams traded buckets the rest of quarter and went into the fourth tied at 36.

The Thunderbirds again struck first, scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter. Steven Divver stopped the bleeding for the Rams with a banked-in three-pointer to close the gap to 44-41.

With three minutes left to play, Sam Orchard, who had 15 points for Highland, chased down a missed layup by Nate Fakahafua, scored a bucket and was fouled. Orchard hit the free throw and tied the game at 44.

On Orchard's play, Fakahafua ran into a support beam that holds up the basket, and did not return to the game.

He led all Ram scorers with 16 points, but Highland missed him when it needed the help most.

Timpview proceeded to come down the court, and played four corners, taking 1:37 off the clock before missing a three-pointer.

Highland returned the favor, working the clock down to 10 seconds. Orchard drove to the basket and missed a layup. Timpview's Eli Robison got the rebound, eschewed a timeout, and passed it to Ryan Sagers, who found Covey on the left side of the court.

Covey's shot rose above the scrambling Highland defense, and did not touch the rim as it swished through the net.

"The shot felt pretty good," said Covey. "But you can't just look at the shot. Look at what led up to it. The rebound by Robison. The pass from Sagers. All of that went into it."
