Ogden » With three minutes left in the game and sporting a double-digit lead, Alta boys' basketball coach Jim Barker called a time out to remind the Hawks to do one thing.
"I told them, it was time for layups," said Barker. "We've had times throughout the year where we like to shoot three-point shots in that situation. I wanted us to be attack-minded and stay aggressive."
The Hawks were the epitome of aggressive, holding the Silver Wolves scoreless for the first six and half minutes of the fourth quarter en route to a 48-37 victory over Fremont in their Class 5A semifinal game at the Dee Events Center.
Alta has had a propensity for nail-biting contests all season, but the Hawks defense had its best showing of the season in the biggest game of the year, ultimately stamping their ticket to face Davis in the title game. Alta suffocated Fremont into 33 percent shooting and limited the Silver Wolf duo of Jacob Nish and Patrick Fishburn to just 10 combined points, 12 off their season average.
Alta's Kyle Davis led all scorers with 16 points to go along with three blocks and four steals. Davis' three from the corner with 4:45 left in the game pushed the Hawks' lead to 10 points at 40-30, and all but sealed the victory .
Austin Albrecht added 12 points for the Hawks, while Jordan Brown pestered the Fremont ball handlers on the perimeter, swiping four steals and keeping the Silver Wolves from getting into any kind of rhythm all game long.
Davis and his teammates had added motivation for beating Fremont. After leaving the Dee Events Center on Thursday evening, the entire Hawk team ran into a large gathering of Fremont fans, who heckled the Hawks with taunts, among other pleasantries.
"Yeah we heard what [the fans] were saying," said Davis. "Thanks Fremont fans. It's not like we needed any extra motivation to beat your team."
Alta's season will now come full circle, having faced Davis in the opening game of the year. Alta lost that game 59-52 because of a seven-point first half that the Hawks could not recover from.
"Davis gets better as the year goes on. They're very physical and well coached," said Barker. "It's going to be a dogfight but it's also going to be a fun, fun game."
