Richfield » It took an extra period, but Monticello was able to edge out Panguitch 54-49 in overtime to win a thriller in the Class 2A boys' basketball quarterfinals Thursday.
Monticello used its defense in overtime to pick up the win as they only allowed two points on one field goal.
"It was our defense all the way," said Dallen Duncan about the overtime. "Our offense was a little rushed, so our defense is where it started."
The Buckaroos built a double-digit lead in the beginning of the third quarter. They led 29-19 with 7:05 remaining in the third, but allowed the Bobcats to go on a 16-6 run to finish the quarter as they tied it heading into the fourth 35-35.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth grudge match as each team had an answer for the other's attempts to pull away. The largest lead was four and there were four lead changes and three ties in the final period.
"The last two games we've done the same thing," said Monticello coach Rhett Maughan. "I just asked the kids to not do the same thing and they did it again."
Maughan did defend his team for the exciting finish. He noted that many of the kids played a lot of minutes as four of the starters never came out of the game. Fatigue, Maughan said, might have played a factor in Monticello's lead being winnowed away.
"When it gets time to really getting the job done and having heart," Maughan said. "That's what's good about those kids is they dig deep and go get it."
Monticello had four of its five starters score in double figures. Cory Young had 10 points and four assists and Duncan had 13 points and seven rebounds. Devin Wright and Steven Redd each contributed 13 points as well.
The Bobcats were led by Eric Frandsen who had a double-double on the game with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Riley Miller almost added a double-double of his own with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
Rich 77, Liahona 66 » The Rebels held a double digit lead most of the game, but Liahona kept fighting by hitting eight three-pointers. Four players scored in double figures for Rich, including Caden Andersen's 29 points.
Piute 64, Green River 50 » With the game tied at 43 with 6:48 left in game, Piute finally hit its stride with a 21-7 run to finish the game. Tyson Westwood finished with a team-high 18 points to carry Piute to the victory.
Bryce Valley 36, Tabiona 34 » Bryce Valley made one last defensive play to seal the win. Bryce Valley's Eddie Dunham blocked Tabiona's layup at the buzzer for the Mustangs to come out with the win.
Kace Roundy led the way with 24 points and eight rebounds.
