Fremont coach Corey Melaney wanted Brock Smith to kick the ball out to the perimeter after Braxton Willie missed the two free throws that could've iced the game.

After all, there were 10 seconds remaining in the Silver Wolves overtime classic against Bingham, and Fremont led by two.

But the sophomore had other ideas. He took it strong to the basket, converted the layup and provided what proved to be the key hoop in the Silver Wolves 71-70 extra session win against the Miners in Wednesday's Class 5A quarterfinal.

"I wasn't going to give up," Smith said. "I knew that I was going to get the rebound and I just wanted to go get the ball and put it back in."

With the crowd at the Dee Events Center hanging on every play, Fremont scored a huge upset. Sure, coming into the game the Silver Wolves were 20-2 on the season and ranked in the top five of every major state poll. But Bingham had been dominant this year, losing just once. The Miners already had beaten Fremont earlier in the season and they were the state's top ranked team from start to finish.

But the Silver Wolves had other ideas. Fremont, with three guys over 6-foot-6 rotating in and out during the game, dominated Bingham 40-26 on the boards. The Silver Wolves, with fresh interior muscle down the stretch, were able to wear down Ben Clifford, the 6-9 Utah State signee, who was held to eight points and three rebounds in the final game of his illustrious high school career.

Most of all, Fremont withstood every Bingham push, every challenge, every run.

"When we played the Miners earlier in the year, we learned a few things about ourselves," Melaney said. "We realized that we could play with them. We didn't win the game, but we were up by three at halftime at their place. That was big for us."

It was also big with how balanced the Silver Wolves were. Patrick Fishburn and Corey Craynor each had 14 points to lead Fremont. Jacob Nish had 12 points, and Smith finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Tate Lewis was able to contribute 10 points as well.

Ty Hannay had a game-high 15 points for Bingham.

Davis 59, West Jordan 52 » Tallan Burton scored a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds to lead the Darts into the semifinal round. Sophomore forward Jordan Loveridge led the Jaguars with 20 points and all rebounders with 10.

Copper Hills 69, West 46 » Steve Larson was dominant for the Grizzlies, scoring 28 points and grabbing eight rebounds. West point guard Tyrell Corbin scored 14 points and had five assists.

Alta 63, Skyline 54 » Kyle Davis turned in a great performance, scoring 30 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jaden Jackson led the Eagles with 20 points.
