Richfield » Rich was able to fend off Milford 67-55 in the first round of the Class 1A boys' basketball state tournament Wednesday.
Rich was able to build a 54-33 lead with 7:25 in the fourth quarter. Milford would not go away though as they responded with an 18-5 run to get within 58-51 with 1:26 left to play.
"You got to give a lot of credit to Milford," said head coach Ashley Brown. "They just never gave up."
Milford was led by Bo Thomas, who finished with 23 points and had 20 of those in the second half. They also survived off of made free throws as they hit 12 of their 14 attempts.
"There at the end we needed to keep our composure a little more," said Caden Andersen. "We played good in the first half, we just needed to limit our turnovers."
The Rebels built a strong lead after a strong second quarter in which they outscored Milford 23-8 to build a 37-19 lead at halftime. Rich had seven steals and two blocks and forced eight turnovers in all to the Tigers to gain the comfortable lead.
"At this point of the year you got to be consistent for all four quarters," said Brown. "You got to be able to play defense and not have a bad night."
Rich was led by Andersen who had 22 points and made 13 of out his 18 attempts from the free throw line and had three other players in double figures. Hayden Mckee had 14, Kayden Calder added 11, and Cooper Cornia added 10.
Tabiona 49, Valley 42 » Tabiona was led by Robbie Giles who had 19 points and used an 18-8 first quarter to jump out with the lead and never trailed again. Gerald Vantassell added 12 and Dane Rhodes chipped in 11 in the win.
Bryce Valley 44, Wasatch Academy 35 » Bryce Valley beat an 18-1 Wasatch Academy to advance. Bryce Valley received a big game from Kace Roundy to earn the victory.
Monticello 51, Duchesne 46 » Behind Dallen Duncan's 18 point game the Buckaroos were able to outlast Duchesne.
Panguitch 46, Intermountain Christian 35 » Panguitch used a 16-4 fourth quarter to pull away for the win. Brooks Leach had 22 including nine in the fourth quarter and Eric Frandsen put in 15 points.
Piute 54, Manila 34 » Piute had three players each score 12 in Kelton Price, DJ Tishner, and Tyson Westwood. Piute built a double-digit lead by halftime and continued to add onto that to cruise to the victory.
Green River 55, West Ridge 46 » Green River used a 25-11 second quarter to build a double digit lead which they maintained for most of the game.
Liahona 62, Whitehorse 60 » Liahona had the lead 58-49 with 1:44 left in the game and survived an 11-4 run by Whitehorse to pick up the win.
