William Walker picked up his scoring, Lehi's defense picked up its intensity, and the Pioneers picked up a convincing 62-37 victory over Box Elder in the opening round of the 4A state tournament Tuesday night.

Walker scored 13 of his game-high 19 in the second half, and the Pioneers held the Bees to that same amount to advance to Thursday's quarterfinals, where they'll face Highland at 7:15 p.m.

Lehi (19-3) pulled away from a 33-24 halftime lead, extending it to 47-30 after three. Walker's strongest stint was nine points in an 11-0 fourth quarter run before his exit with 3:58 remaining.

"We picked up our intensity at halftime and redefined a lot of thing we were hoping to do in the first half," said Lehi coach Craig Gladwell, whose team won its 11th straight game. "I thought our defense was even tighter than it was in the first."

While Walker was relatively quiet, Lehi got strong first half scoring performances from Zach Stanley (13 points) and Josh Scott (14) as it took a 33-24 halftime lead.

"That's always big for us," Gladwell said. "We have a lot of weapons and a lot of kids stepped up tonight We have six or seven kids who are capable of scoring for us."

Spurred on by a traveling fan section three busloads strong, Box Elder (13-10) enjoyed an early 7-2 lead before Stanley scored seven points on an 11-3 run that gave Lehi an 18-10 lead after eight. Strong early shooting by Cody Eyre and Brant Mecham kept the Bees within striking distance.
