Davis basketball: Consistency a hallmark

After a narrow 75-71 overtime loss to Fremont earlier this season, Davis' boy's basketball coach Jay Welk explained to his team the problem that was so blatant, he didn't even think it was necessary to say out loud.

"[I told them we needed to work on consistency], but I don't think I even needed to tell them," Welk said.

That was two months, 11 consecutive wins, and a Region 1 championship ago.

Now, the Darts personify consistency. Over the past eight weeks, they've torn through Region 1 to take first place and are riding an 11-game winning streak going into the state tournament.

Senior Josh Vanweezep, the Darts' second-leading scorer behind Landon Horne with 11.5 points a game, is proud of what his team has accomplished, but know they're far from were they ultimately want to be.

"We're really proud of our success this year so far," Vanweezep said. "I think we're peaking at the right time and we just need to stay focused on what we're doing and get ready for a great team in Jordan. A state championship is the ultimate goal though."

All five Darts starters are seniors, the third straight year Welk has had to work with an experienced team, and this particular squad is not opposed to sharing. Three players spread out the majority of the scoring, with Vanweezep, Landon Horne, and Tallon Burton all averaging over 10 points a game.

Burton knows how much his team loves to share, and even if he has a down game, he fully expects the entire squad to pick him up.

"We just share the ball and work hard," Burton said. "I personally just try and stay with being physical and rebounding. But whenever some one has kind of a down game, someone else always steps up and gives us the momentum that we need."

With potentially four games in five days if they can make it to the finals, the Darts' bench will be a key factor in keeping energy out on the floor. Seniors Kyle Sprague and Tommy Wilding will have to give solid performances in their last trip to state as Darts. Junior standout Trevor Webb will also have to continue his breakthrough play in the tournament, where his 9.71 coming off the bench will be vital to the their success.

The Darts' road to a state championship could be especially rough. After Jordan, the Darts could potentially face West Jordan, the 2009 champions that ousted Davis on its way to the championship.

Besides their unlucky route to the title, Welk fully expects every team they face to be hunting their heads, but knows his team will be focused and not absorbed in running the table.

"You don't try to focus on that too much. It sounds cliché, but you really try to focus on the task at hand and do the thing we do the best," Welk said, "When you have a streak like this, teams are well aware that you're a good team and bring their best effort, so I expect that same treatment in the state tournament."
